What issues do you have with coaching, safety, etc?

Aug 19, 2009

So I'd like to know what issues you might have with this sport. It could be anything, from training to how girls treat eachother.

I'll tell my issue. It's the safety. At least on my previous team, I don't know how it is for everyone else but, I had a serious issue with the safety.  In 2008 4 synchronized swimmers fainted while doing hypoxic training. One girl had not made her third over-under (the latest safety guidelines about hypoxic training says to only do Under-overs once if at all during a strenous training session) and the coach became angry and told the girls to do a 4th over-under. The girls made it back after the under but then dropped like rocks to the bottom, unconcious. They where rescued, don't worry. The team put out a story to the news saying that it was an issue with the clorine that made the girls become unconcious, they ordered a test of the pools chemicals and it came back as negative for anything that could have made these girls faint. The team completely ignored the results and still does this dangerous hypoxic training. Now mind you my mom is a CPR/First Aid/AED instructor and knows all about the heart, also she knows the head of Sports Medicine and has talked to them about the incident. They said it was indeed a coaching issue and they need to change how they do their workouts. The club continues to use the same training that caused the girls to faint and whoever confronts them is attacked and made to look crazy. Trust me I know. So that is my issue, now I'd like to know yours!

You might find something called "shallow water blackout" of interest. There's a little blurb about it at the end of this guide: http://synchronizedswimming.swim.com/synchronized-swimming-guides/holding-your-breath-longer/

Does this apply to boy synchro swimmers as well?

Yes of course it applies....I was on a team that  my mom and I had serious safety issues with....my mom works in Emergency Medicine, so she knew what she was talking about. I just couldn't understand why the team couldn't hire a lifeguard or stop doing over-unders nonstop. Ah well, it's all in the past now.

Anyway Rob it applies to everyone....everyone is at risk.

I think it's an important topic that lots of people don't want to talk about. I've had some seriously bad experiences and some great, but I just want the sport to be safer and better! Just know that what you feel is true and no one else can tell you differently. If you feel unsafe, then you are unsafe; if you feel you are being bullied by a teamate or your coach, then you are being bullied. Don't ever doubt yourself and keep yourself safe!
