Holding your breath

May 21, 2009

What is the longest period of time that you've had to hold your breath during practice or a performance?

This last swim season my team routine had this massive crazy looking lift and then we did this one jump and then went under for something like 3 counts of eight which was a semi-slow count and OMG we were dying when we came up after a hard hybrid. The longest I personally had to wait was in this caidence jump and I was second to last and it was a looooonnnngggg time it felt like. My diaphram was kicking me hard! Anyway yeah, it might not have been that long but it sure felt like it!

It's amazing how long synchro swimmers hold their breath!  I'm sure it feels like forever!

In the 90s it was super popular for soloists to have first hybrids that lasted forever! I had a couple solos where almost the whole entire first lap was taken up by one, long, traveling hybrid! I'd say it was probably close to 45 seconds. That trend has come and gone a few times. Anyone else?

Oh my gosh, that's amazing Andrea! When I was in high school, our coaches would have us hold our breath for as many laps of freestyle as we could. Some people could go 3-4 laps without taking a breath! Now, though, people are much more cautious. Passing out in the water can be really really dangerous.
