Old Fashioned Bathing suits

Can;t Imagine Swimming in Suits like those from 1918

The girl is demonstrating a technique to break a hold by the boy swimmer in lifesaving

At my swimming club we have old pictures from the 1940s and 1950s and the boy swimmers wore suits like that one,   Those would be awful to race in and the girls suit is really primitive with the old fashioned cap.  The guys suit would be awful to dry out and to do synchro in. The suit wouldl be like swimming with a rash top on al the time.  Different times and different ideas of what a bathing suit had to be guys and girls.

Very interesting in this old book the girl is the lifeguard rescuing the boy.

Styles change and better now because they are easier to swim in than these old swim suits.

Whoa that is crazy! I guess everyone was in the same, uncomfortable, draggy boat though.

That lifeguarding technique looks pretty intense too!

Have any more of those drawings?

Click on my profile and I will have pictures of old time swimmng and old time swimming suits.  Easier to post there.

The lifeguard picture is from a book my mom made me and my sisters read when we were learning to swim.  It is called How to Swim and the argument is that girls and women are better suited for most swimming - synchro, distance, technical strokes  The only area where male swimmers excel is in short speed events.  My mom is 53 and she still does some synchro lessons and she does open water swims.  In her last swim she and 3 women were the only swimmers to finish.  Four boy amd men swimmers had to give up due to cold water.

She looks like she had a leotard type of suit.

We did a show wear we swam in a leotard.  It was hard as it sucked in the water and was so heavy   to swim with.

The boy's suit looks like one of the new racing suits that guys where that cover their whole body.

If a modern style of the full body suit was available to boys, more boys ,might stay in swimming.  It wou;ld also be practical for synchro instruction for boys so they don't get cold in the pool or on the pool deckl

keep forgeting  my password - here some more old style swimsuits that boys and men wore

I'm a fashion student so I find the changes very interesting.  Boys and mens suits were wool and were sometimes 1 pc and sometimes 2 pcs

Until the 30s and 40s the stuff we  had to wear was so much like what female side swam in.
